Macallan unveils US$60,000 per bottle limited-edition whisky

Meet The Macallan 72 Years Old in Lalique, the oldest single malt the brand has ever bottled.

Distilled in the 1940s, just after second world war, this single malt has been aged in Macallan’s oak casks for 72 years. Only 600 bottles are available.

For its 72 years of maturation, the deceptively light colour hints that this is not an ordinary single malt ... although delicate throughout all aspects, it provides an intense experienceNick Savage, master distiller, Macallan

The golden amber-coloured liquid offers flavours of peat, lemon and green apple, which are noticeable both on the nose and on the palate. Hints of vanilla, raisin and ginger can also be detected.

The delicate notes are complemented with gentle peat smoke and oak smoke that adds depth to the drink.

“For its 72 years of maturation, the deceptively light colour hints that this is not an ordinary single malt,” says Nick Savage, Macallan master distiller. He describes the golden amber-coloured single malt as “an exquisite balance of strong, sweet oak with the peaty spirit shaping its refined character”.

He adds: “Although delicate throughout all aspects, it provides an intense experience.”

The whisky comes presented in a bespoke hand-crafted Lalique crystal decanter and housed inside a sustainably sourced wooden case.

The design of the Genesis Decanter by Lalique is specifically inspired by the architecture of the new distillery. The distillery itself, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners, is influenced by the natural landscape found in Scotland.

The shape of the Lalique decanter echoes the gentle curves of the distillery’s architecture. The box, on the other hand, is inspired the distillery’s interior.

The limited edition whisky will be available for retail starting in August at select locations around the world. The price is a cool US$60,000 per bottle.
