Vintage shopping in Japan: 4 stores in Shimokitazawa, the best neighbourhood in Tokyo for all your s

I learned my lesson. Since that fateful day, I have become a seasoned shopper in Shimokitazawa, attuned to the rhythm of its ever-changing racks.

With so many one-of-a-kind finds, it is easy to get lost in the shops – but that is all part of the thrill. The neighbourhood is the perfect place to while away an afternoon in pursuit of your next favourite piece, thanks to an impressive array of second-hand clothing and accessories from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s.

It is part of Tokyo’s thriving vintage luxury scene – Japanese people take great care of their belongings, and sell them on when they are no longer in heavy rotation.

Young Indians turn to thrifting and shun ‘boring’ fast fashion

It comes as no surprise, then, that Shimokitazawa is as well stocked with brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton as it is with one-of-a-kind items. For those visiting the Japanese capital and planning to invest in preloved luxury, the four addresses below are great places to start looking.

Both the Odakyu rail line and the Keio Inokashira rail line serve Shimokitazawa station, the closest stop to the neighbourhood.

For the thrifty: Flamingo

The colourful racks at Flamingo are filled with a curated but wearable collection of clothes hand-picked by an intrepid US-based buyer. From the elegant allure of the 1940s to the funky vibes of the 1980s, Flamingo is a treasure trove of American vintage.

Flamingo stays true to its second-hand-store roots and keeps its prices low and its items affordable. If you time your visit just right, you might even catch one of its legendary sales.

For streetwear: Harajuku Chicago

Harajuku Chicago takes great pride in its diverse collection of vintage clothing for men and women, sourced from Japan, the US and Europe. As the oldest branch among the six Harajuku Chicago stores in Tokyo, it has been a mainstay since its doors opened in 1983.

New items arrive almost daily, from Levi’s denim and graphic T-shirts to cosy sweatshirts and ’90s streetwear. While the boutique suits a wide range of styles, think of it as an upscale thrift store with a nostalgic, beachy vibe.

Harajuku Chicago is more than its impressive vintage selection – the store also boasts an extensive range of traditional Japanese garments. Browse its collection of footwear, obi belts and accessories, all of which make great souvenirs.

For a high-low mix: 2nd Street

No listicle on Shimokitazawa’s fashion scene would be complete without mentioning 2nd Street, which has gained a reputation as one of the best consignment shops in Japan.

The chain has over 500 stores nationwide but its Shimokitazawa branch, which spans two floors and stocks both branded and non-branded apparel, stands out as a must-visit spot.

From the well-organised collection of sneakers – ranging from classics to limited-edition releases – to a timeless assortment of watches, 2nd Street has something for everyone. It is also the store where the LV patent leather tote caught my eye, so expect to find bargains on top brands here.

For designer finds: Ragtag

Ragtag is another chain known for its high-end second-hand clothing, and its Shimokitazawa location is, unsurprisingly, excellent in that regard.

Boasting an impressive collection of global labels such as Acne Studios, Ralph Lauren, Stüssy, Supreme and Burberry, Ragtag’s curation is filled with high-quality, often hard-to-find, pieces from contemporary names – including archival items from the likes of Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto.

While it is slightly pricier than traditional thrift stores, the great condition of its items speaks for itself. Its also offers alteration services, in case your new find could do with a little tailoring.
